Doc Lilac suggests planting 2-3 starters 3-4" apart in the same pot or hole to achieve a bigger bushier lilac more quickly.  (some growers do this)  Use all of the same variety or even different ones in the same spot.

oc suggests you use "starter" size lilacs as growers do. Ours are "plugs" grown in trays or in small pots. Most pots are 3-4" diameter. These sizes transplant well into larger containers or into ground, and keep shipping costs down. If shipped dormant (usually in April), they are approximately 3-6" tall. Later, leafed out, they may be 12" tall, depending on variety. If taller, they will be cut back to facilitate shipping and create bushier plants.

f we elect to ship "bare-root" due to U.S. Dept. of Agriculture requirements, you should handle these with more care. Please note that the rare, unusual, or hard to propagate will be slightly more expensive.
